A mother rabbit stares through the bars of her cage, her body worn from litter after litter. Her babies press against her, warm and fragile, unaware of the fate that awaits them.
Tell her it will be OK. Tell her that her babies will be fine.
But itās a lie.
Because Easter is coming.
And for thousands of rabbits, Easter doesnāt mean chocolate eggs and family gatherings. It means suffering, neglect, and death.
š° The Easter CrisisāLegal, Yet Cruel
Every year, as Easter approaches, rabbits become the face of seasonal impulse purchases. Tiny, soft, and helpless, they are sold as giftsāmost often to people who have no idea how complex their care truly is.
Within weeks, reality sets in. The rabbit doesnāt like being picked up. The kids lose interest. The hutch is too small, but no one upgrades it. Vet bills are expensive. The lucky ones are surrendered to rescues. The rest? Abandoned outdoors, left in hutches to rot, or worse.
And what of the mothers? The ones who never get a break, never leave the cages, never feel the sun on their backs? They are bred over and over again, their babies taken too young, their bodies exhausted. Then they, too, are discarded.
Itās happening every single day, and it is completely legal.
š° The Law Must ChangeāHereās What Needs to Happen
Rabbits are the UKās third most popular pet, yet they have nowhere near the legal protections of cats and dogs. This must change.
š We demand legislation that includes:
ā
Equal legal protection for rabbits as cats and dogs, ensuring they are no longer legally neglected.
ā
Mandatory spaying and neutering from a certain age to prevent reproductive cancersāone of the leading causes of death in female rabbits.
ā
Comprehensive insurance coverageāif insurers provide full cover for cats and dogs, they can do it for rabbits too.
ā
Strictly licensed breeding to prevent mass overbreeding, impulse sales, and the abandonment crisis.
ā
Regulations on pet shops and online sales, stopping irresponsible purchases that lead to suffering.
ā
Minimum welfare standards for housing, including bans on tiny hutchesārabbits need secure, spacious, weatherproof environments.
ā
Veterinary training in rabbit care as standard, ensuring proper treatment and ending outdated, harmful practices.
