This proposal would normalise cruelty and redefine rabbits\u2014sentient, intelligent animals\u2014as livestock.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1100\" data-end=\"1324\">Rabbits are the <strong data-start=\"1116\" data-end=\"1155\">third most popular companion animal<\/strong> in many homes. Families view them as loved pets, not food. Allowing their slaughter would represent a serious ethical failure and a step backwards for animal welfare.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1326\" data-end=\"1440\">Therefore, it is vital to <strong data-start=\"1352\" data-end=\"1415\">oppose the Rabbit Meat Consumption Proposal in South Africa<\/strong> before it becomes law.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why These Regulations Are Dangerous<\/h3>\n\n\n<p data-start=\"1490\" data-end=\"1633\">Animal protection groups across South Africa have uncovered widespread cruelty in the current, unregulated rabbit trade. Investigations show:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1635\" data-end=\"1805\">\n<li data-start=\"1635\" data-end=\"1686\">\n<p data-start=\"1637\" data-end=\"1686\">Inhumane killing and poor transport conditions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1687\" data-end=\"1740\">\n<p data-start=\"1689\" data-end=\"1740\">The slaughter of stolen or abandoned pet rabbits.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1741\" data-end=\"1805\">\n<p data-start=\"1743\" data-end=\"1805\">Unsanitary conditions that pose serious public health risks.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1807\" data-end=\"2042\">In addition, this proposal would give such cruelty legal cover. Instead of reducing suffering, it could expand it under the illusion of regulation. As a result, the regulations would <strong data-start=\"1990\" data-end=\"2016\">normalise animal abuse<\/strong> rather than prevent it.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ethical and Public Health Concerns<\/h3>\n\n\n<p data-start=\"2091\" data-end=\"2153\">Legalising rabbit slaughter under the Meat Safety Act would:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2155\" data-end=\"2384\">\n<li data-start=\"2155\" data-end=\"2229\">\n<p data-start=\"2157\" data-end=\"2229\">Undermine South Africa\u2019s commitment to humane and sustainable farming.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2230\" data-end=\"2306\">\n<p data-start=\"2232\" data-end=\"2306\">Risk spreading diseases through unhygienic slaughter and weak oversight.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2307\" data-end=\"2384\">\n<p data-start=\"2309\" data-end=\"2384\">Send the dangerous message that <strong data-start=\"2341\" data-end=\"2381\">companion animals can be commodities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2386\" data-end=\"2612\">Furthermore, rabbits are <strong data-start=\"2411\" data-end=\"2430\">sentient beings<\/strong>. They feel fear, form social bonds, and rely on humans for protection. Treating them as livestock would cause unnecessary suffering and contradict international welfare standards.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Call for Compassion and Legislative Integrity<\/h2>\n\n\n<p data-start=\"2674\" data-end=\"2849\">The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (<strong data-start=\"2740\" data-end=\"2750\">DALRRD<\/strong>) must act with compassion and integrity. Regulating cruelty is not progress \u2014 <strong data-start=\"2829\" data-end=\"2846\">banning it is<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2851\" data-end=\"2865\">We call for:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2867\" data-end=\"3074\">\n<li data-start=\"2867\" data-end=\"2931\">\n<p data-start=\"2869\" data-end=\"2931\">A <strong data-start=\"2871\" data-end=\"2887\">complete ban<\/strong> on the rabbit meat trade in South Africa.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2932\" data-end=\"3009\">\n<p data-start=\"2934\" data-end=\"3009\">Recognition of rabbits as <strong data-start=\"2960\" data-end=\"2981\">companion animals<\/strong>, not consumable products.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3010\" data-end=\"3074\">\n<p data-start=\"3012\" data-end=\"3074\"><strong data-start=\"3012\" data-end=\"3036\">Stronger enforcement<\/strong> against illegal breeding and sales.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3076\" data-end=\"3214\">These actions would align South Africa with global animal welfare standards and reflect the compassionate values shared by its citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How You Can Help<\/h2>\n\n\n<p data-start=\"2936\" data-end=\"3006\">The public consultation closes <strong data-start=\"2967\" data-end=\"2982\">25 May 2025 but you can still email\u00a0 your objections<\/strong>. Legalising their slaughter for meat would legitimise the mass killing of animals many people consider part of their households.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5088\" data-end=\"5356\">Reports from animal welfare organisations show the current rabbit trade is rife with abuse \u2014 including inhumane killing, poor hygiene, and even the slaughter of stolen pets. These proposals would not protect rabbits but legitimise cruelty under the guise of control.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5358\" data-end=\"5588\">This is not only an ethical issue \u2014 it is one of public health, moral leadership, and compassion. Introducing formal rabbit meat regulation sends the message that it is acceptable to commercialise and kill our companion animals.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5590\" data-end=\"5804\">I urge you to reject these proposals and instead <strong data-start=\"5639\" data-end=\"5684\">ban the rabbit meat trade in South Africa<\/strong>. Doing so would align your department with the compassionate majority and strengthen protection for sentient animals.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5806\" data-end=\"5963\">Please act decisively.
